Searching for Technical Santuary in the Rain

Finding a place to plug my laptop in and get online has proven to be a bit of a challenge here in Swansea.

The house I am staying at will have internet access in a few weeks, so it won't be a problem then.  But until then, what's a gal working remotely in the internet industry to do?

There are a few options.

1.  The Mill is a pub just a little bit outside of the true center of Swansea; I think it is technically in Brynmill.  WiFi is free there, but of course I am obliged to buy something before I log on.  I never felt like I was taking up anyone else's seat while I was clicking away for an hour or so- I even joined in a PNN meeting using Skype video conferencing, but everyone kept making fun of me for working from a pub (AKA, drinking on the job).  Anyway, the pub was nice, but I really don't want to drink beer all day just to earn my free internet access.

Just because I am in Swansea does not mean that I need to turn into Dylan Thomas.
2.  Baguette Du Jour.  This is a little, corporate looking chain in the city centre that I was reluctant to try, despite the "Free WiFi" sign hanging in the window.  I should have followed my gut.  The gals working there were perfectly pleasant, but the mocha I ordered was not.  Also, the cafe closes at 5 PM, which is exactly when I need to be online in order to communicate with folks back at the PNN homebase.  So, nix the Baguette Du Jour for WiFi options.

3.  Starbucks.  WiFi is not free at Starbucks: it costs 40 pounds (or 80 dollars) for a month long pass of unlimited access.  Some people may scold me for supporting a huge American Corporation while I am away in another country, but Starbucks has proven to be my best option for WiFi access in Swansea.  My access always comes on quickly and doesn't suddenly quit on my while I am in the middle of a task, and the baristas never glare at me like they want me to go away.  Ever since I worked at a Starbucks for a year in college, I have always felt quite comfortable at any given Starbucks.  I feel like I can go in to use the bathroom when I am not even planning on buying something, and I feel like I can nurse my grande mocha for over an hour while I check emails and post things on the internet.  I don't feel like I am bothering anyone while I am there.

If I find more WiFi options in Swansea I will be happy to try them out.  But for now, Starbucks it is.
