In Which I Fancy Myself Faye

In Which I Fancy Myself Faye

(Faye, who does that thing she do as the "costume mistress" for The Wonders)

Last night, I actually uttered the phrase "I am with the band."

Maybe not aloud, but definitely in my head, when I walked in the backdoor of Newport's The Bassment at 630 PM, for soundcheck.  And definitely before I left the house, while I was making an extra effort to dress as I thought "the girlfriend of the lead singer" should dress.  It's a role I never imagined I would play, but I thought that my cheetah frabric, jewel encrusted ballet slippers, glitter eye make-up, and artfully/randomly bobby-pinned up hair made for the perfect costume.

But do you want to know a secret about "being with the band?"  It can be quite boring.  You have to get there at 630 for a 1030 gig, and other than making a quick trip out to McDonlads for "dinner," and watching soundcheck, there's not much to do other than sit around and drink.

I know fully understand why many bands go onstage drunk-they simply didn't have anything else to do for four hours before hand!  (and somehow I think that whipping out a book or getting going on a game of Monopoly does not quite cut it as "rock and roll.")

WhoYouKnow went on third.  I had never heard them played before, and even though their type of music isn't my usual preference... I loved them!  And to their credit, they were the first band to get a random drunk girl to dance solo and barefoot on an empty dance floor.

After their nine song set, Ashley's shirt felt like it had just come out of the wash.  I wore his glasses around for awhile, and they were so fogged up that I thought they could do with some windsheild wipers.  But I wore them anyway, because it was trippy to have my eyesight altered while my mind was already a little cider-squishy.  And because I thought that while I wore the lead singer's glasses, everyone would know "I am with the band."

Only a dork like me would go for the glasses, when I am probably supposed to be wearing his leather jacket.

Listen to Who You Know here.
